Presence and light, that is all a hallway needs.
The Basis presence sensor uses radar to detect whether someone is in the room, even when they are standing, sitting or lying still. It measures brightness and has a built-in siren. This way it switches the light on only when someone is there and it is dark enough, without it going off just because nobody is moving. It connects via Wi-Fi and sends its values locally via MQTT to Home Assistant, ioBroker, openHAB or Node-RED.

  • Presence and motion: also detects people standing or sitting still, up to 6 m / 120°
  • Built-in brightness sensor and siren
  • Up to 3 zones by distance, for example entrance and middle of the room separately
  • Via Wi-Fi, no hub; Home Assistant discovers the device automatically via MQTT
  • No camera and no microphone, data stays at home
  • Developed and made in Germany, German support, 3-year warranty

What the Basis is made for

Light in the hallway and stairwell

Light on as soon as someone arrives, and it stays on as long as someone is there, even when they stop to take off their jacket.

Storeroom, basement, guest toilet

Rooms where you briefly look for something: the light goes off when the room is really empty, not after a fixed time.

Presence for automations

Who is at home, which room is occupied: the Basis provides presence as a value in Home Assistant, for scenes, notifications or the siren.

Presence sensor instead of motion detector

An infrared motion detector (PIR) only reacts to movement: anyone standing or sitting still is left in the dark after a short time. The radar of the presence sensor also detects the smallest movements, down to breathing, and reports for as long as someone is in the room. More on this: Presence sensor or motion detector?

Basis presence sensor: readings in the browser and the same values in Home Assistant via MQTT, presence, motion, distance, brightness and siren

No app, no hub, no account

Setup is done in the browser. Home Assistant discovers the presence sensor by itself via MQTT Discovery, and the values appear as separate entities; ioBroker, openHAB and Node-RED read the same MQTT values. The cloud for remote access and push notifications is optional. Step by step: Integrating a presence sensor into Home Assistant.

Which presence sensor fits: several people or zones KL MZ, room deeper than 6 m KL LD, heating or ventilation KL, otherwise Basis with 6 m and no room climate sensor

More than presence and light?

If the presence sensor should also measure temperature, humidity and air pressure, for example for heating and ventilation in the bathroom or bedroom, choose the KL presence sensor: it has the room climate sensor in the same housing, with a 6 or 9 m range. For several people and freely drawn zones there is the KL MZ. All models compared: Presence sensors

Already have a Basis presence sensor? Upgrade it with room climate using the climate multisensor.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Basis enough for my project?

Yes, if it is about presence and light: switching the light in the hallway, stairwell or storeroom, reporting presence for automations. As soon as heating, ventilation or room climate come into play, the KL presence sensor is the right choice; it measures temperature, humidity and air pressure in the same device.

Do I need a hub, an app or an account?

No. The presence sensor connects to your network via Wi-Fi and is set up in the browser. The data goes via MQTT directly to Home Assistant, ioBroker, openHAB or Node-RED. The web app and the cloud are an additional option for remote access.

Does the presence sensor work with 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

It uses the 2.4 GHz band. Most routers transmit on 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time, in which case it simply connects to the 2.4 GHz network.

Which power adapter do I need?

A USB power adapter with 5 V and at least 1 A, with a USB-A or USB-C socket. A 2 m USB-C cable is included, the power adapter is not. Alternatively, you can power the presence sensor with 5 V from the back via the screw terminal.

Does the presence sensor record images or sound?

No. It has neither a camera nor a microphone. The radar only measures the distance and movement of people.

What is the difference from an infrared motion detector (PIR)?

An infrared motion detector only reacts to movement, for example when someone walks through the room. The radar in the presence sensor also detects people who are sitting still, reading or sleeping, measuring the smallest movements such as breathing. This keeps lights or heating on as long as someone is in the room. More in the guide Presence sensor or motion detector?

Can I add room climate later?

Yes, with the climate multisensor accessory. It measures temperature, humidity and air pressure and is connected to the Basis presence sensor.

How many people are detected?

The Basis reports whether someone is in the room and provides the distance of the last person detected. The KL MZ presence sensor counts several people.

What warranty do you offer?

We grant a three-year warranty on all our products. It covers manufacturing and material defects.
