Correctly Installing LiDAR Level Sensor

Correctly Installing LiDAR Level Sensor

What to Keep in Mind During Installation

For accurate measurement results, two fundamental points must be observed when mounting the LiDAR level sensor. These mounting tips are part of our complete overview Measuring and monitoring rainwater tank levels, where you will also find guidance on choosing the right sensor and connecting it to your smart home

1. Align the Sensor Exactly Vertically

The LiDAR sensor must be aligned vertically to the surface of the tank contents. Even small deviations, often barely visible to the naked eye, can cause measurement errors.

Here is how to align it correctly:

  • Use a spirit level to make sure the sensor and housing are parallel to the surface in every direction.
  • Check the alignment again after fastening it.
  • Avoid tilting or misalignment when mounting it.

2. Ensure a Clear View for the Light Cone

The light cone of the LiDAR must not be obstructed by objects such as pipes, cables, or the tank wall. The diameter of the light cone grows linearly per meter:

  • at 1 m → 6 cm
  • at 2 m → 12 cm
  • for each additional meter → + 6 cm

This means:

  • Mount the sensor as centrally as possible with a clear view downward
  • Keep a minimum distance of 10 cm from the surface
  • For clear liquids, this should be at least 20 cm

Optimal Mounting in Narrow Shafts or Rainwater Tanks

In practice, the following method has proven very effective in tight spaces:

Mounting in a Pipe: Ideal for Narrow Shafts

  1. Use a pipe with a larger inner diameter than the light cone at the minimum fill level.

    Example:

    • Rainwater tank 1.8 m deep
    • Pipe 2 m long
    • Inner diameter approx. 15 cm
  2. Mount the LiDAR sensor centrally at a pipe opening, ideally with a matching lid.
  3. Place the pipe vertically into the rainwater tank and secure it with a suitable pipe clamp.

Advantages of this method:

  • the light cone always has enough space
  • the sensor gets a clear view of the surface
  • wave motion is effectively absorbed
  • ideal when the shaft is very narrow or many cables are in the way
